Barnsley 1 - Reading 3

Another day, another defeat, sees the departure of Simon Davey as Barnsley manager, another woeful performance on the pitch by his players effectively bringing an end to his term as manager.

No matter where you stand on whether he should go or not, the results this year have been terrible, Sheffield Wednesday aside.
The optimism of pre-season has failed to materialise into results in the Championship.

It all looked good in the first twenty minutes with Barnsley well on top, with positive attacking football culminating in the first goal for the reds from Andy Gray on his home debut. A well taken powerful headed goal from a cross, the kind of goal that other strikers on the books have spurned week in week out.

The reds then pressed the self destruct button with confused defensive work letting Reading in for an easy equaliser. The main problem looks to stem from defensive performances, or lack of them. Players who were performers last year, at present haven't shown anything of their ability, Jamal in midfield had another lack lustre display based on the quality and goals of last year, even captain Steve Foster doesnt look to have his footballing head on these days. All in all the players need a good kick up the 'arris and a new manager should do this.

Andy Gray's header put the reds ahead, but Reading Alex Pearce hit back when he was allowed to turn the ball in after a corner.

Luke Steele then got in a tangle with was judged to have brought down Jimmy Kebe after a long ball and Noel Hunt drove home the penalty to hand the visitors a narrow lead.

Two minutes later Kebe picked out Hunt who glanced his header home to seal the points.

The frustration of another bad home result angered Barnsley fans, calling for under-pressure manager Davey to go, and the club released a statement at 7pm confirming his departure "by mutual consent".

Barnsley manager Simon Davey commented on the game before his departure was confirmed: "We are as disappointed as the fans. We don't like losing. I am there with their frustration.

"I thought we started the game well. We were on top and got a goal, then conceded a goal to a free-kick which wasn't a free-kick.

"In the second half we lost a penalty. I've not seen it since so I am not saying if it was or wasn't. On first showing I didn't think it was, then in a space of a minute we are 3-1 down."

Reading Manager Brendan Rodgers comments:

"We played some good football and worked very hard. I thought we were excellent and positive.

"We showed a lot of resilience because it's a hard place to come to. We will always score goals and I am delighted for the supporters.

"I am very positive we can do well this year. This group of players will get better and better. Ambition is a great starting point for me.

"I signed for three years and I have brought in a lot of players. I want to be a fixture and that's why I came here."
