Carling Cup 3rd Round
Tuesday 22nd September 2009

Barnsley 3 - Burnley 2

Premiership new boys Burnley re-visit Oakwell for the third round of the Carling Cup. The reds did an impressive double over the Lancashire side last year, with plenty of goals coming in the games. And tonight's game was no different, a good game for the spectators, who witnessed another impressive performance in the Robins revival.

It was Burnley who took the lead in the 21st minute through Steven Fletcher who's effort from outside of the box flew into the bottom right of Preeces goal.

The reds immediately came back as Iain Hume's header came back off a post a minute later, with Jon Macken being in the right place close range to bundle the ball home for the reds.

We were the side on top for the remainder of the first half, which was capped off with a strike from outside the area by Anderson De Silva, who's lovely hit shot flew into the top corner to take the reds in for a deserved first half lead.

Last years giant killers in the cup had the boot on the other foot this time, as the reds looked in charge of a very competitive cup encounter at Oakwell. Burnley spoiled the party by drawing level soon after the re -start, with Chris Eagles poking the ball home from close range.

Barnsley weren't done though, more positive play from Mark Robins' men saw Hugo Colace claim his first goal in a reds shirt to regain the lead.
He saw his headed effort go in from a ball from Anderson De Silva, giving a South American feel as Brazilian supplied the Argentine Midfielder.

The inevitable late charge by the Premiership side saw the tykes defend a couple of free kicks late on, as Burnley pressure saw a few wild tackles from the home side as they sought to hold on to a good win and a book a place in the fourth round of the Carling Cup. We weathered the storm and held on for another Premiership cup scalp. A performance to warm the hearts of the reds fans and confirmation of a more happy chapter in the history of the club in prospect.

BFCWEB Man of the match: Anderson, looked impressive and capped it with a stunning goal.
