Barnsley 0 - Coventry 2

Preview:

Supporters went home (or to the pub!) very disappointed with the first home game of the season, as bogey team Coventry turned the reds over at Oakwell in the first game of the season for the third consecutive year.
We never looked able to create a goal, and sadly to say it was a return to the very bad old days of last season.

Improvement is needed on Tuesday against Preston, or I am afraid the stands will reverberate the early cries for the managers head!

The performance of keys players had a bearing on the game, with Hammill having an off day on his first full appearance since his full signing from Liverpool, Jamal on the other wing was equally ineffective.
At the back the normally faultless Bobby Hassell had an uncharacteristic bad day at the office.

It leaves Coventry City as the only team with a 100 per cent record in the Championship following a this 2-0 win at Oakwell.

Chris Coleman's side followed up last week's success over Ipswich by making it two from two in the league with a shock Carling Cup defeat by Hartlepool United in between.

Leon Best fired the Sky Blues ahead early on and Clinton Morrison secured the win after Rob Kozluk was given his marching orders for two wild tackles within ten minutes.

It was a positive first 15 minutes for the reds, but it was Coventry who took the lead in stunning style with their first attack of the game.

Clinton Morrison was brought down in a central position on the edge of the area and Leon Best stepped up to smash his free-kick into the roof of the net.

The reds followed up with plenty of possession, but as was the case last season, didn't look to have a reply in us. The hope was we would start a Sheffield Wednesday style revival in the second half, but it wasnt to be.

Aron Gunnarsson could have sealed it for the Coventry with just 15 second-half seconds on the clock, but he failed to hit the target from around 25 yards having made his way through the Barnsley midfield far too easily straight from kick off.

Coventry continued the second half in positive fashion and Steele did well to parry Gunnarsson's effort to safety, before Morrison put a half chance over the crossbar in the 53rd minute as the Tykes keeper dropped a routine ball into the penalty area.

It went from bad to terrible as Kozluk received his second yellow card in the space of two minutes for a wild tackle on Gunnarsson.

Iain Hume made his return to action as a 67th-minute substitute for Jon Macken alongside Onome Sodje in a staight switch up front.

And Morrison secured the points nine minutes from time with a well-taken volley from Osbourne's cross.

BFCWEB Man of the match: Steve Foster, tried hard in defence in a team of bad performers.
