The reds failed to capitalise on the recent run of form to come unstuck at the Riverside. A battle of two play off contenders saw Boro take the spoils.

In the end it was Middlesbrough who moved to within two points of a play-off place after this home victory against Barnsley.

Boro were the better team in the first half a Scott McDonald's shot was saved, but boro took the lead as Chris Killen prodded in from close range.

Darren Moore went close as he headed wide for the reds before the game went further out of our grasp when Gary O'Neil doubled boro's lead, as he placed his shot cooly past Luke Steele.

We improved after the break with Hugo Colace firing in from 18 yards, to give us a sniff of a point from the game, but Boro held on for the victory, despite a good chance for the reds in the dying minutes.

Mark Robins commented:

"We've given them two goals - simple as that. The second half was a little bit of a transformation.

"We created more chances, got the ball into the area more and really could have taken something from the game.

"It's just elementary things that we're not doing right and if we do them right we will end up being more successful than we were here."

Gordon Strachan:

"We stood our ground when we needed to on the physical and mental side. That's good as Barnsley are a test.

"They sorted us out in the second half but we were actually very confident until the goal went in - and that was their first shot on target I think.

"But we'll learn from that and there were a lot of good things to take from the game."
