Sad to say, but the dee-dars emerged from this derby match as victors, and based on the performance of the reds in this game, we didn't deserve anything from it. The entire midfield seemed to have been bypassed.

Alan Irvine's new reign at Sheffield Wednesday got off start with a victory over the reds, reckon it was just our luck that Wednesday had the added incentive of a new manager just in time for the South yorkshire derby.

Tommy Spurr got in after some poor defending from Luke Steele and Carl Dickinson by poking in a third-minute opener.

It took us four minutes to get back on level terms after an error from Lee Grant. The Owls keeper misread Emile Hallfredsson's cross and watched red-faced as the ball dropped in the far top of the net.

The away side battled on and sealed a rare win when Marcus Tudgay sent Jermaine Johnson through and the winger rifled expertly home.

Rival fans threatened to spill out of their respective stands at the end as emotions ran high.

Bobby Hassell and Anderson De Silva made way for Adam Hammill and Nathan Doyle in Barnsley's line-up, while Irvine tinkered with Wednesday's starting XI as Lewis Buxton, Johnson and Michael Gray all returned to the side.
Doyle has yet to prove his worth in a reds shirt, questions are asked as to what he can give to the squad, but Robins knows what he is doing at Oakwell, saying that the only thing i disagreed with on Saturday, was not using Anderson at half time to turn the game, instead we ended up with the lack lustre Jamal Campbell-Ryce. Not Robins best decision.

Wednesday got two corners early on and gave Irvine the perfect start by scoring from the second.

Gray swung the ball in and after Steele failed to get hold of it, Spurr swept the ball home from no more than three yards.

But Wednesday's wild celebrations were short-lived as Barnsley levelled in fortuitous circumstances.

Carl Dickinson played the ball to Hallfredsson on the left edge of the area and his whipped cross curled over the stranded Grant and into the far corner.

Grant later saved brilliantly when Daniel Bogdanovic chased down on goal in the 16th minute and from the subsequent corner Tykes skipper Stephen Foster's header bounced just inches over.

Wednesday re-took the lead in spectacular fashion in the 21st minute.

As Johnson charged on to Tudgay's headed pass and lashed home a stunning angled volley, right-footed, from just inside the area.

Referee Andy Penn waved away what looked like valid Barnsley claims for a penalty soon after when Hallfredsson went down in the box.

Potter denied Barnsley a second equaliser as half-time approached as he cleared Foster's header from an Hammill corner off the line.

The reds strived to fashion an opening, and when we did the away side defended as if their lives depended on it.

In a last gasp effort to turn the game Mark Robins sent on Iain Hume, Andy Gray and Jamal Campbell-Ryce for Hallfredsson, Jon Macken and Bogdanovic with 25 minutes remaining, but Wednesday held on for a rare victory, the first for Irvine, and consigned Barnsley to the third defeat of 2010.
