First home game of the season and a welcome win, complete with clean sheet. The win came thanks to an own goal from Palace man Paddy McCarthy.

The reds got the first points of the Championship season as Paddy McCarthy's O.G. gave the reds a welcome win in the first game in front of the home fans.

McCarthy turned in a Jay McEveley cross into his own net on the 35th minute.

Diego Arismendi made his Oakwell debut, while Stephen Foster was back in the heart of defence despite reports that an injury would keep him out.

Adam Hammill was lively as Barnsley started the livelier pouring forward down the left side, and McEveley also shaved the crossbar with a corner inside the first five minutes.

McEveley was then given a yellow for a challenge which saw his boot connect with Alan Lee's face.

The tykes were bossing the game at this stage and we got our reward for the hard work and pressure in the 35th minute when McCarthy was forced to put the ball into his own net.

It was Hugo Colace who won the ball in midfield on to Arismendi who picked out a lovely ball finding McEveley on the flank, his powerful cross was diverted past the stranded Speroni by McCarthy.

Goran Lovre had a curling effort land just wide of the right hand post and Hammill looked for a penalty as he continued his endeavour and the reds looked to make the scoreline more comfortable.

McCarthy heading over after rising un marked inside the Barnsley box just after the interval, missing his chance to make amends for the own goal.

McEveley looked to be on course for the Barnsley second when Colace slid a nice ball through, but the usually impressive Speroni produced a superb stop to keep him out.

Nathaniel Clyne kept Palace in the game when he produced a brilliant las minute saving block in the box to stop Hammill's goal bound effort.

The Tykes hung on for their first three-points of the season.
