Barnsley got their first home win of the season against Coventry City, and despite a few injuries within the squad Andy Gray got a brace and went past his 100 career goals mark. The Reds continued their positive march up the table, but consigned Coventry City to the relegation zone.
It was red hot temperatures within Oakwell in October!? And at times this season the skills and football on display have been equally red hot.
Perennial bogey side Coventry came to Oakwell, but this years Barnsley FC being created by Keith Hill is a resillient and imaginative one.
In the 42nd minute Chris Hussey handled the ball in his area, and up stepped veteran Andy Gray for the penalty, looking for his 100th career goal, which he calmly tucked away into the bottom corner to put the Reds in front and chasing the first win of the season at Oakwell.
The Reds took command of the game early on despite O'Donovan going very close early on for the visitors as he fired into the side netting.
Vas te started for the Tykes and he was the first to test the Coventry goal firing in powerfully from a free kick which was parried by the Joe Murphy in the away goal. He had another chance but should have done better with his header following an accurate cross from Danny Drinkwater.
Gray got his second as he stretched out for an half volley to send the ball sailing into the Coventry goal following good work and cross from Jim O'brien after he tricked his way behind the Coventry defence.
O'brien himself almost got his name on the scoresheet, but his rasping shot was kept out by Murphy.
The away side tested Steele only fleetingly, but the Reds were two strong at home and the Sky Blues look like they may have a testing season in store.
