McDonald 11

The third loss at Oakwell in seven days will set some alarm bells ringing around the club, and in the managers head, still very early days, but the Reds face to tough away tests in the next two games. Tonight boro did seem to be a class above this years version of Barnsley FC, as they cruised to an easy 1-3 victory away from home despite going a goal down early on thanks to a deflected own goal from McManus.

The reds were 1-3 down by the break and it stayed that way, the visitors looked comfortable for the victory.

The Reds did take the lead, and the first goal of the campaign came thanks to an own goal from McManus as he knocked the ball into his own net under pressure following a Perkins cross for Barnsley FC.

Middlesbrough were level on 11 minutes though Scott McDonald has he headed in un-marked from a Robson cross, Robson then turned the tables to put Boro in front two minutes later as he tapped in for an easy goal after McDonald terrorised the Barnsley back four.

The Reds looked for the equaliser and bet the Boro offside trap for Haynes to run clear on goal, but his effort was poor and was easily kept out by Carl Ikeme.

Robson nearly made it three just after but his well hit curling freekick sailed wide of the Barnsley goal.

Two minutes before half time, Middlesbrough moved out of reach as Emnes got the third for the away side, McDonald again was the architect for Boro, and his pass found Emnes who placed the ball under and past Luke Steele in goal.

In the second half, Boro looked to add to the rout and went close through Arca and McDonald, but it was Emnes who missed the best opportunity during a moment of confusion he could have nicked the ball from Steeles feet.

All in all, the Reds were never really in this encounter as a resurgant Boro side were in control and the better side for large sections of the game.
