Hugo Colace staying at Oakwell

It is with mixed emotions I receive the news that Colace has re-signed with the reds, with at one stage a blatant disregard to the reds and lack of any immediate show of loyalty to the place, he wanted away for more rewards and delayed committing to the reds until now.

This has slightly tarnished it for me, as last seasons player of the season is without doubt an asset to the club, and on that point his staying at Oakwell has to been seen as good news weighing up both sides of the arguement.

He ended speculation over his future by signing a new two year contract at Barnsley.

The 26 year old Player of the Year had been linked with a move to either Swansea and Crystal Palace.

But to his credit Colace in the end turned down offers from England, Mexico, Italy and Russia to stay with Barnsley.

Barnsley boss Mark Robins was delighted to keep hold of the influential midfielder.

"The contract has always been on the table and my hope was that he would eventually re-sign for us," said Robins.

"It's an important signing and the club beat off serious competition for his services from clubs in Britain and around the world.

"For Hugo it was important for him to find out what other options were out there. With so much interest in him he needed to take time to think about it, as anyone would.

"The important thing is that he has come back to us and signed the contract that was on offer. He could have secured more financial rewards by going elsewhere, but he believes in what we are doing at Barnsley Football Club and he couldn't turn his back on the supporters that gave him last season's Player of the Year award."
