Yeovil 2 - Barnsley 0
PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY No.3
MATCH REPORT
Barnsley FC fell to their first defeat in pre-season, going down to a Yeovil side who out played the reds at Huish Park, so back to the drawing board for Davey, as the opening day of the season draws closer.
This week reds manager Simon Davey, said that he had finished for now in the transfer market, happy with the four new faces he has brought in, the reds manager now has to make them all gel before the opening day test at big spending and Championship favourites QPR.
It all started quietly, yeovil first went close through Gavin Tomlin on 23 mins. but was kept at bay by the combined force of Dennis Souza and El Haimour. Yeovil made the break through on 40 mins., Tomlin getting on the re-bound from the initial effort from the impressive Schofield, putting it past Letheren in the Barnsley goal.
Odejayi was back to his clinical best (not!) on 42 minutes following good work from Iain Hume, as he got in a good cross for Odi who didn't trouble the keeper with a wayward header from 8 yards out.
Brian Howard and Jon Macken were brought on after the break, but the reds continued to look disjointed. Yeovil still in control and looking the most likely to score again with Letheren being tested.
Barnsley finally sprung into a bit of life on 58 mins. but Brown kept out first a header from Foster and an effort from El Haimour.
Tomlin missed the mother and father of all sitters when he shot wide of an open net from 5 yards, then it was club captain and regular inspiration Howard who nearly grabbed the equaliser but his curling freekick unluckily hit the cross bar with the Yeovil keeper well beaten.
The game was sealed by Yeovil on 82 minutes as Lloyd Owusu drove one in to the far post after beating El Haimour and racing clear on goal. He later was through again too easily on 87 mins. with Kirk also going close in the final minute. Rounding off a good display for the league 1 hopefuls, but sadly from a red perspective showing that work still needs to be done.
