Norwich City 4 - Barnsley 0

MATCH REVIEW
Barnsley were well and truly spanked at Carrow Road, in what was by far the worst showing of the season from the reds. Before the game Norwich were languishing on the edge of the relegation zone, the change of managership worked against us in a number of ways, it took on-loan striker Jamie Cureton back to Norwich to face his 'former' team of just last week, and also gave the Norwich City side fresh impetus under Bryan Gunn.
But in what can only be described as a shambolic second half the reds capitulated to the Canaries. Once more it is now looking increasingly crucial that Simon Davey finds another striker or two, maybe another loan player if need be, even if it means breaking the Oakwell transfer fee record to get the right player.
Norwich City caretaker boss Bryan Gunn got off to a winning start as his side wiped the floor with the reds at Carrow Road.
The relegation-threatened Canaries sacked Glenn Roeder earlier in the week, but showed no signs of missing their former boss as Wes Hoolahan grabbed his first goal for the club.
Hoolahan netted for the first time since moving from Blackpool last summer before Jamie Cureton, Sammy Clingan and Darel Russell got the others to gain a deserved win against a poor tykes side on the day.
Former goalkeeper Gunn has taken the managers job on a temporary basis and he handed a recall to Jamie Cureton.
Cureton was set for a weekend off as his loan spell at Oakwell rendered him unavailable to face the Canaries, but the 33-year-old was recalled within hours of the sacking of Roeder on Wednesday and he scored the decisive second to sink the players he had called team-mates since November.
Cureton had the first sight of goal when he flashed a header wide from Lee Croft's cross before Russell also came close.
Hoolahan broke clear down the left and cut the ball back perfectly for Russell to drill low and hard and only a superb block from Dennis Souza prevented him from getting the opener.
Gary Doherty then headed over from six yards when he rose highest to meet Clingan's corner before Hoolahan went close.
A flowing move saw Russell tee the winger up on the edge of the area and he got in a low shot which Tykes goalkeeper Heinz Muller gathered at the second attempt.
Russell then saw another powerful shot fail to hit the target as the half drew to a close.
Norwich continued to press at the start of the second half and were rewarded when Hoolahan got his sides first in the 55th minute.
The impressive Russell was again the creator as he played the winger in on goal. Hoolahan had lots to do but got around Muller and buried the ball from a tight angle.
Hoolahan then fired another shot into the side-netting as Norwich City pushed for a second goal, Cureton was next to test Muller with his curling effort from 20 yards.
Cureton then did get on the scoresheet in the 74th minute as he got in following a moment to forget by Darren Moore. The veteran defender tried to shepherd a long ball forward back to Muller but Cureton nipped in and got the ball. Cureton showed great composure to run in and clip the ball past Muller for his first goal in a Norwich shirt, and one against his former team mates.
Gunn replaced both goalscorers and one replacement, Matty Pattison, was involved in the third goal. He was brought down in the area by Marciano Van Homoet and Clingan sent Muller the wrong way.
Russell to grab a goal for himself in the last minute and complete the rout of the reds, sub, David Bell, was involved and he picked out Russell with a cross from the right and he placed his header past Muller to seal a crucial three points, and suddenly make the reds look like they may get sucked back into the danger zone.
Listen to Simon Davey's comments:
"I decided not to speak to the players straight after the game because I might have said something I regretted.
"They are not a happy bunch at the moment and after that performance I can't blame them.
"We did all right in the first half but in the second we were simply a shambles. That's not what we are about at Barnsley and it's something I'll need to address."
