Notts Forest 1 - Barnsley 0
MATCH REVIEW:
Nottingham Forest take the points, which is a bit of a disappointment for Barnsley fans, but as often happens in football, you sometimes don't get points where you might expect them to come abit easier.
Forest where holding up the whole division prior to the game, and they scrapped for the points at the City ground.
A strike from Joe Garner was enough to see Nottingham Forest secure a 1-0 win against Barnsley FC. pulling them off the bottom of the Championship table and also eases the pressure on under-fire boss Colin Calderwood.
The only and what turned out to be the winning goal at the City Ground came on 36 minutes, with Garner making his way between two Tykes defenders and headed home Nathan Tyson's left-wing cross.
Jon Macken should have put the tykes into the lead and silenced the Forest fans, who were giving him some attention thanks to his former connections with the Forests' East Midlands rivals Derby, by converting a similar chance midway through the first half, but headed wide when found by Jamal Campbell-Ryce's pinpoint delivery from the right.
Campbell-Ryce's right-foot drive from 25 yards that was palmed away by Lee Camp on three minutes looked like a sign of things to come for Barnsley FC, but both sides struggled to retain possession and didn't create much in an scrappy first half.
Lewis McGugan curled a free-kick over the crossbar from the right-hand side of the area in the 10th minute, and also Robert Earnshaw hit a low shot wide soon after Macken's glaring miss.
The second half was a much better for the spectators, with Forest not allowing the reds to get back into it, and it was the home team that looked like pulling away as they created a host of chances to stretch their lead before the hour mark.
McGugan's had a mazy run and pulled the ball back from the byline which ended in Earnshaw's goalbound shot being blocked.
McGugan then cut inside from the left wing and unleashed a swerving right foot shot from 25 yards, clipping the top of Mullers crossbar. Barnsley keeper Heinz Muller tipped Joel Lynch's dipping shot over the crossbar.
The Tykes still looked dangerous, proving a threat on the break when Camp got down quickly to tip Anderson De Silva's shot from the edge of the area round a post.
Barnsley put Forest under pressure in the final 10 minutes and twice came close to snatching an last gasp equalising goal in injury time.
Stephen Foster nearly did his speciality, as he headed against the crossbar before De Silva's 30-yard free-kick through a crowded penalty area was clawed away desperately by the Forest keeper at the last moment.
