Barnsley 0 - Reading 1

MATCH REVIEW :
The reds suffer a disappointing loss at the hands of a less than impressive Reading side, who were down to ten men before half time. The game never really got started as a spectacle, as both teams cancelled each other out and it was looking like a 0-0 draw, until a silly mistake by Dennis Souza, gave Reading an easy opportunity, and it looked like it was us who had ten men, as the Oakwell defence went completely missing.
Reading claimed their second victory of the week after securing a 1-0 success at Oakwell and playing over half the match a man down.
After winning at Coventry City on Monday night they made it six points from six at Oakwell thanks to Brynjar Gunnarsson's gifted winner.
Bad defensive play from Dennis Souza gave Reading a goal on a plate, after looking fairly even to that point, but they managed to keep us at bay a man down in the second half following Jimmy Kebe's red card.
The possession was pretty much shared early on but Reading were denied by a good reflex save from Heinze Muller as he tipped Kevin Doyle's flicked header round his post.
The reds looked to hit on the counter-attack and they almost got in when, following a bad clearance, the ball fell to Jon Macken who powered his shot over the bar.
Barnsley FC had a another good opportunity moments later with a free-kick on the edge of the area, but, after a layoff from Hugo Colace, Simon Whaley sent a poor shot well wide of the target, he had a bad game yesterday, not looking up to it, and I can't say I think it would be in the reds interest to keep hold of him permanently.
Ex reading man and now on loan Barnsley striker Jamie Cureton went close with a cheeky chip from outside the box but Marcus Hahnemann back-pedalled and gathered the ball.
The game wasn't much of a spectacle until it came to life in the 35th minute when Kebe was sent off for raising his hands after a tangle with Souza.
The Tykes, swarmed forward trying to replicate the attacking dominance seen against Burnley, and we began the second half positively seeking the opener, and top-scorer Macken tested keeper Marcus Hahnemann with a long-range shot.
Reading were by no means second best with 10 men and they went close when Ivar Ingimarsson was unmarked at the far post and was only denied the opening goal by a another good stop from Muller.
The reds failed to monopolise with an extra man, and it started to look like it wasn't our day, and then the worst mistake of the day presented Reading with the goal to take the lead in the 64th minute after a defensive mistake from Souza left Gunnarsson to knock into the empty net. Souza was in the position where he should have heaved the ball into the East stand, but tried playing it out, lost the ball, and the Reading forward simply had to play the ball across to the totally unmarked Gunnarsson... which leads to the question where the hell was the Barnsley back four? Can't usually fault Foster at the back, and can't blame for wanting to get forward more as there are goal in him, but I'm afraid we lost this one, thanks to a missing defence.
We put on some pressure at the end, with Odejayi at his comical best, as he skied a shot almost vertically from 4 yards out, I do wonder what he looks like in training some times, he has got a good part to his game, which Simon Davey realises, which is to provide knock downs, and win ariel challenges and provide the front two, there is nobody better at that than Odi... but ask him to kick the ball properly towards goal and that's another matter. Ultimately Reading held on for victory.
The reds have got a month of tricky fixtures, but knowing us, and football we will probably end up wiping the floor with Wolves and see an Odejayi hatrick.
