Sheffield Weds 0 - Barnsley 1
PREVIEW:
MATCH REVIEW:
The reds claim an historic double over our the enemy in blue and white. Thanks to some heroic defending when it was needed and a moment of sublime skill from our favourite Jamaican!
Culminating in what is the first victory at Hillsborough in nearly 26 years, a day when Ronnie Glavin claimed the spoils for the reds in a similar moment of skill to Jamal Campbell-Ryce's goal last night.
Typically bringing out the groans from dee-darrs, moaning about their team instead of accepting the fact that Barnsley FC are now the proven top team in South Yorkshire based on the derbies amongst the four teams, as the reds bag the double scalp of Sheffield Wednesday to go with that of Doncaster Rovers claimed earlier in the season.
The points are very welcome, but the double over Wednesday is the thing that will make every Barnsley man a very happy man this morning! It also brings to an end a very miserable January results and performance wise, and a snowed out February, easing the pressure felt from the drop zone, and with games in hand I would say that we should move away to safety this year.
A moment of brilliance from Barnsley's Jamal Campbell-Ryce proved the difference in this South Yorkshire derby.
Campbell-Ryce raced on to a Daniel Bogdanovic pass, skilled his way past Owls defender Richard Hinds and slammed home an angled left-footed drive.
Jamal Campbell-Ryce's solitary strike was enough to see Barnsley take the points, allowing the Tykes to pull clear of the drop zone.
The Jamaica international showed why a clutch of Premier League clubs are monitoring his enigmatic talents with a stunning 38th-minute strike after dancing in from the wing.
Campbell-Ryce's fine finish secured the Tykes their first win at Hillsborough since 1979 and saw Simon Davey's band of foreign imports complete a rare league double over Wednesday, who went down 2-1 at Oakwell in October.
An equally stunning goal-line clearance from Tykes' Bobby Hassell denied Wednesday's Marcus Tudgay late on. This after 90 solid minutes from our two centre halfs who performed impeccably in the middle of defence, Moore and Foster are the first choice men in the middle, this game illustrating how much we missed Fosters presence in previous matches.
This was Barnsley FC's first game in three weeks and the win lifts us away from the relegation zone with games in hand, combined with the satisfaction of obtaining the double of the dee-darrs for the first time in 60 odd years. I believe the reds will build on this, despite it being against neighbours Wednesday, this game was critical, and immensely important that we got the points. Again the reds shone through when it mattered, and the gritty determination of the likes of Bobby Hassell helped secure the points against a poor Wednesday side, who themselves may find themselves in trouble of the drop, if they continue in this vein.
It was the Tykes' first win in the Championship since Boxing Day with four successive league defeats seeing them slip to within two points of the bottom three.
Listen to Barnsley manager Simon Davey:
"Jamal's a tremendously hard worker. When we've asked him to do things in training, he's always last to leave the training ground, always the first out.
"I think a lot of people will have said his end product wasn't what it should be and we worked on it with him.
"But it came from within him and he wanted to improve and he's now showing that he can produce all the skill, produce the pace, the aggression and he's now got an end product and he's becoming an all-round player.
"Yes there's interest. We turned down bids in excess of £1m in the window.
"Our system caused them problems in the first half and second half, Sheffield Wednesday are always going to dominate spells at home, but our defending was fantastic."
Men of the match: Darren Moore, Jamal Campbell Ryce & Bobby Hassell, we can't split them.
