Barnsley 0 - Southampton 1

PREVIEW
MATCH REVIEW:

The reds were frustrated at Oakwell by what is an inexperienced Saints side, and an excellent goalkeepers display keeping the reds' goal bound efforts out. Southampton never looked to pose much of a threat to the Barnsley goal, meanwhile the reds saw chance after chance squandered, the worst culprit of wastefulness being Ritgers who, for the life of me is not a Championship player, never mind the Premiership. I feel we should send him back to Blackburn as soon as we can, as the club is wasting its money on the 'player'.

Southampton produced a smash-and-grab display as the reds put them under heavy pressure before winning 1-0 at Oakwell.

With The Tykes hoping to get more, with a draw being the worst case scenario at Oakwell, David McGoldrick nodded home Lee Holmes' cross 14 minutes from time to secure a priceless win for the visitors, and send the Oakwell faithful home (or the pub, in my case!) very frustrated.

The victory for Southampton, was also helped due to the quality display of goalkeeping from Kelvin Davies, this important win, well against the run of play, moves the Saints level on points with fourth-from-bottom Norwich City.

Barnsley started well and should have taken the lead very early on when Mounir El Haimour's blocked shot fell to Jamie Cureton in the penalty area, but he fired his left-footed shot over the bar.

The Reds continued to dominate and we missed several chances to take the leas, with Jon Macken's swivel and shot going just over the bar, Jamal Campbell-Ryce firing over and Maceo Rigters hitting a shot wide from a dead cert opportunity six yards out.

The Saints could not forge any chances in the first half, with Bradley Wright-Phillips' snap-shot being their best chance.

The second half began in similar fashion with Barnsley in the driving the game, just wanting the dominance to convert into goals, Stephen Foster almost opened the scoring with a trademark header from a Campbell-Ryce corner, which was brilliantly turned over the bar by Davies.

Simon Davey's men contined to press in our search for that elusive goal, with a heavy period of pressure that saw Macken head straight at Davies, before Dennis Souza's header was cleared off the line by Lloyd James.

The Barnsley assault on the Saints goal continued and Cureton was again presented with a great chance to score, but his far post close range shot was blocked by the in-form Davies after a good cross from Campbell-Ryce.

In the 76th minute Southampton dealt the thing that the home fans were dreading, as McGoldrick rose to head in his sixth league goal of the season when he converted Holmes' cross into the bottom corner to give the Saints a very un-deserved lead.

Jan Poortvliet's young side had taken confidence by the goal and Holmes went close to doubling their lead when he fired over from a good position in the box soon after.

The goal knocked the wind out of Barnsley's sails, as it looked increasingly like it wasn't going to be our day, and despite strong appeals for a penalty when Kayode Odejayi was literally pulled down in the six-yard box, we didn't get the opportunity to draw level, meaning Southampton completed a classic smash-and-grab and Barnsley were left wondering how they failed to take anything from the game.

Listen to Simon Davey's comments:

"I have got a few irons in the fire and hopefully we will have a face [new signing] in the building by Wednesday. I need to get one striker in, possibly two."

"We have had endless amounts of chances and possession but we couldn't get the ball in the back of the net. When we did breach them, their goalkeeper made saves.

"Teams will always get one chance and they took it, unfortunately we had 10 chances and did not take any."
