Coca Cola Championship Date: 3rd March 2009

Cardiff City 3 - Barnsley 1

MATCH REVIEW:

The reds are back to being in a precarious position right on the edge of the relelgation zone, following another away defeat. We did not repeat the excellent work shown against QPR, and now I look at the last couple of games of the season against Reading and Wolves and hope that we have enough points in the bag before then, for to rely on gathering points in the those two games will be a big ask at that stage.

The welsh bogey side climbed to fourth in the Championship with this win over the reds, as we slip to 20th in the league.
In the hostile Ninian Park the referee was influenced by the welsh crowd into making very home biased decisions, making it harder for Barnsley FC to get anything from the game. The frustration of this seeing Simon Davey sent to the stand for the second half.

Cardiff moved into the play-off zone with a 3-1 win against Barnsley at Ninian Park.

Joe Ledley set the Bluebirds on their way with the opening goal on four minutes and Michael Chopra then made it 2-0 just before half-time.

Substitute Jon Macken pulled a goal back for Barnsley after the break, but their hopes of any comeback were stopped in our tracks moments later as Andranik Teymourian was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Peter Whittingham added late gloss to the scoreline as Cardiff closed to within six points of an automatic promotion place.

Ledley, who netted the only goal in the FA Cup semi-final last season, put the welsh one up when he blasted home from close range after an inswinging Whittingham corner had caused havoc in the Reds' penalty area.

Cardiff were soon into their passing rhythm - with the Barnsley midfield, who received glowing praise from their manager after their performance against QPR at the weekend, struggling to get hold of the ball.

After a quiet period in the first half, City almost doubled their lead on 30 minutes - but Whittingham's curling free-kick was tipped round the post by Heinz Muller.

They did get a second when Chopra was on target in the 43rd minute.

We started the second half well as Daniel Bogdanovic testing Dimitrios Konstantopoulos and then substitute Darren Moore heading just wide at the far post.

The pressure eventually told on the hour when, after a long throw from Rob Kozluk, Moore knocked the ball down to Macken, who slotted the ball in with his first touch.

But two minutes later, that good work was undone by a moment of madness from on-loan Fulham midfielder Teymourian, who had already been booked in the first half, raised his hands in a melee on the edge of the box to give the referee no choice but to show him a second yellow.

Gavin Rae's thunderbolt cannoned off the bar, but it was not long before Cardiff scored a third when Whittingham shot from outside the area.

The reds have to get something from the game at Coventry on Saturday or else we will be in desperate trouble in the last month or so of the season, with a big survival battle on our hands.

Listen to Simon Daveys thoughts on the game

Barnsley boss Simon Davey:

"It's frustrating because I thought that the referee wasn't up to standard."

"I can't say much but he told me I couldn't watch the match in the second half."

"When there is a hostile crowd some people can get overawed and influenced for decisions they have to make for the home fans."
