Derby County 0 - Barnsley 0

MATCH REVIEW:

Rams keep out rampant reds

Barnsley's clash with Derby county ended goalless as the reds created numerous chances to secure victory but failed to take any with Michael Mifsud twice having one-on-one chances saved by Derby goalkeeper Stephen Bywater. All in all another point in the coffers against relegation, but could so easily have been three on the day, but the reds can take lots of positives from a good away performance.

Bywater also produced a stunning save to deny former Ram Jon Mackens close range effort.

Cheered on by a capacity crowd, Derby started brightly and forced a corner in the opening minute when Andy Todd's cross was deflected behind by Bobby Hassell.

We survived the early pressure and created some of our own as we carved out two chances in as many minutes as Hugo Colace's goalbound effort was blocked by on-loan Watford midfielder John Eustace followed by a Jamal Campbell-Ryce shot into the side-netting from the left-hand side of the area.

A long throw set Gary Teale free down the left in the ninth minute, and he came within inches of scoring but looped his shot narrowly over the bar.

Barnsley went close with a similar effort soon afterwards when a nice chipped shot by Anderson de Silva from the edge of the box landed on the roof of the net.

The visitors were then presented with a golden chance to open the scoring. Robbie Savage's poor header allowed Macken to release Mifsud, but the Malta international's shot was again blocked by Bywater.

Another long clearance by Bywater caused Barnsley problems on the stroke of half-time as Heinz Muller dropped the ball under a challenge from Rob Hulse, but we managed to clear the danger.

It was Derby who again started the half brightly as they immediately created a chance after the break through Steve Davies, as he broke clear down the right wing providing a cross to Eustace, but he headed straight into the arms of Muller.

From the goalkeeper's clearance, a short back pass by Todd allowed Mifsud a second one-on-one opportunity, but he again came out second best to Bywater.

Robert Kozluk had to come off with an injury after 49 minutes, being replaced by weak squad member for the reds - Mounir El Haimour.

The change coincided with Derby seeing more of the ball in their opponents half and Muller reacted well to push Eustace's shot wide after 65 minutes. From the resulting corner, Todd was unable to direct a far-post header towards our goal.

The tykes threatened again midway through the second half when Bywater failed to collect Andranik Teymourian's long free-kick. Stephen Foster was first to react to the loose ball but directed an overhead-kick straight at the goalkeeper.

Bywater had another lucky escape when he left El Haimour's deep cross from the left only to see it hit the post.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper redeemed himself by producing a superb save from to again deny Macken in the last minutes.

Simon Davey tells BBC Radio Sheffield that the reds were unlucky not to win after watching them draw 0-0 with Derby.

"Ordinarily a point at Derby would be something for a big celebration, but on this occasion, it has to go down as a disappointment.

"That's up there with our best performances. We dominated the first 45 minutes and we were better than them in the second half.

"It's frustrating to create chances and only end up with one point."
