Barnsley 2 - Plymouth Arg. 0

PREVIEW
MATCH REVIEW :

The reds bag another welcome 3 points, in a game where yet another away team player gets his marching orders, seems to happen every game at Oakwell. Although Plymouth weren't all that impressive when they had all 11 men on the pitch.

Anderson De Silva notched his first goal of the season, after going close with headers several times, before finally finding the net.

It was the first win in five matches for Barnsley as Anderson De Silva and Jamal Campbell-Ryce got the better of 10-man Plymouth at Oakwell.

De Silva got the opener, and his first of the season with a header from Diego Leon's free-kick in the 38th minute with reds fans having to wait for the points to be secured until the last minute as Campbell-Ryce scored from the penalty spot, for his fourth of the season.

The Pilgrims were a man down after just 28 minutes as Simon Walton was shown a straight red card after kicking out at De Silva following a strong challenge.

Simon Davey's reds again produced some exciting, free-flowing football at times, but in the last third we still have problems putting chances away. And in the end made a meal of finishing off a fairly standard Plymouth side.

Central defender Darren Moore (groin) was back from a six-match injury, and he was welcome back, after a sticky start, the fans now know what he can do, Rob Kozluk was also back in the team.

Ex Barnsley man Rory Fallon was suspended for Plymouth so Steve MacLean returned for Paul Sturrock's side.

Barnsley missed an easy chance to take the lead in the 10th minute as Leon crossed and Anderson De Silva arrived on the end of it unmarked but he headed wide with just Plymouth goalkeeper Romain Larrieu to beat, it should have been a goal.

The game came to life in the 26th minute when Plymouth midfielder Walton left referee Dean Whitestone with no choice other than to show a straight red card.

The former Leeds and Ipswich midfielder got riled after De Silva's challenge and kicked out at the Brazilian right in front of the referee and linesman.

De Silva then headed the following free-kick and rattled the crossbar the rebounded fell to Bobby Hassell, and the Barnsley midfielder forced a fine one-handed save from Larrieu with his fierce shot from the edge of the area.

We deservedly broke through in the 38th minute. As Leon clipped another nice free-kick into the area and this time De Silva was on target with his header for his first goal of the season, it got a bit of a deflection that strike partner Jon Macken seemed to be claiming.

De Silva had yet another effort and nearly scored a second five minutes after half time, firing in a low shot from 20 yards that Larrieu turned away and then Argyle defender Krisztian Timar headed the ball on to his own crossbar after more pressure from the Brazilian.

Plymouth worked hard as the reds kept most of the ball but without creating any clear scoring chances and striker Paul Gallagher reminded the home side they had only a slender lead with a quick 25-yard shot on 66 minutes.

Davey sent on-loan Blackburn striker Maceo Rigters after Jamie Cureton again displayed why he wasn't getting in the Norwich side, with 20 minutes left he injected a bit of pace, but impressed in those 20 minutes.

Within minutes he turned on the edge of the area and hit a powerful shot to the near post top corner that Larrieu did well to turn away.

Barnsley laboured to make sure of the points as in the last minute Leon was tripped in the penalty area by Plymouth substitute David McNamee and Campbell-Ryce coolly converted the penalty.

BFCWeb man of the match: Anderson De Silva, impressive in midfield, was in the thick of it again, and had several chances himself, scoring one.
