Barnsley 1 - Preston 1

PREVIEW
MATCH REVIEW:
The reds peformed brilliantly throughout this game, with the first half performance probably the best we have seen them play this season, rounded off by a goal out of nothing from Jamie Cureton, as he lobbed the Preston keeper with the outside of his boot for a stunning strike. Confidence seems to be returning for Cureton, following his first goal for the tykes a couple of days ago at Burnley.
A dubious free kick awarded by another terrible referee (are they all bad, or do they just save the bads ones for Oakwell?) gave the Preston the chance they needed to pull level and deny us our third win on the bounce.
Preston remain on the edge of the play-offs after coming back for a 1-1 draw, meanwhile the reds are now pulling nicely away from the drop zone, and are looking to build up to the play offs.
Jamie Cureton's goal on 16 minutes looked to be enough to set the Tykes on course for a third win in a row.
It was on-loan winger Ross Wallace who earned Preston a point inside the final 20 minutes by firing home a well taken free-kick, although most in the ground felt he shouldn't have been given the opportunity, the sloppy ref also made another poor decision, giving Preston a close range freekick opportunity after Foster looked to have performed a good tackle on the edge of the box.
Preston showed their attacking intent when, after a bit of sloppy midfield play from the tykes, Wallace surged into the penalty area but his goal-bound shot was blocked well by Stephen Foster.
Preston looked fairly dangerous going forward with the long ball over the top the main method in the early stages.
But it was Barnsley who took the lead with their first effort on goal in the 17th minute through Cureton.
Cureton pounced on the loose ball inside the area and showed great improvisational skill to lob the ball using the outside of his foot over stranded Preston goalkeeper Andy Lonergan.
Preston almost hit back in the 35th minute when Barry Nicholson's cross found Stephen Elliott in the area but his header was brilliantly saved by Muller.
With the game now stretched the Tykes almost doubled their lead following a swift counter-attack, Rob Kozluk rounded two players into the box but when faced with Lonergan he lifted the ball over the crossbar, with Macken clear to his left.
The visitors had a good opportunity to draw level 10 minutes after the break when Foster was wrongly adjudged to have fouled Chris Brown on the edge of the area and from the resulting free-kick Wallace narrowly missed the outside of the post with a curling effort.
Moments later Barnsley substitute Mounir El Haimour had a great chance to test Lonergan with a volley effort which he wasted.
As the Tykes continued to push forward De Silva produced a moment of real Brazilian magic when he sent a lovely volley from 35 yards crashing against the crossbar with Cureton following up only inches away from putting in the rebound.
Preston substitute Neil Mellor had a good opening midway through the second half but from just inside the area he shot straight at Muller.
The match turned into a real end-to-end battle with both sides knowing the next goal would be critical and El Haimour was again close to grabbing that goal with a shot which curled just wide of the post.
Just as it looked as though Barnsley were going to press home their advantage the hosts grabbed an equaliser in controversial circumstances with 15 minutes to go.
De Silva was adjudged to have conceded a foul on the edge of the area much to the dismay of the midfielder, his team-mates, and the fans, Wallace took full advantage of the chance presented by the referee, curling home a superb free-kick into the top corner. Until that point the reds looked to be on the way to another win, and the referee cost us two points in this one.
