PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY No.6
Barnsley 0 - Wigan Ath. 6

King 8 Heskey 18 Valencia 26 De Ridder
MATCH REPORT TO FOLLOW
Premiership team Wigan Athletic were entertained here at Oakwell tonight. Entertained might be the relevant word where this match is concerned , as the reds let the Wigan side entertain themselves to their hearts content. Leading to worries about where the 'heart' is in the team at this early stage.
First off these are indeed friendly matches required to get players to match fitness, it is the same for every club, now Simon Davey, may say that the results arent that important (he would love to have had a pre-season of getting into the winning habit though), but try telling that to Rotherham and Wigan, who whilst getting the team out for fitness purposes ALSO managed to have the drive and cutting edge to show what indeed they can do.
I think the reds need to start digging deeper within these games and get out of this habit of losing before the important games commence, if we can't find the traditional Barnsley heart by the start of the season then we could see some early season tonkings at places like big spending QPR.
Rant over, wigan started on 8 minutes with a goal from Marlon King, England striker Emile Heskey got the second past letheren on 18 mins.
Antonio Valencia provided the best of the three first half goals on 26 minutes following a good cross field pass from Daniel de Ridder.
De Ridder got one himself just after the break after being hit by the ball after it came of a Barnsley defender the ball coming off him into the nets.
It became abit of shooting practice for Wigan, then De Ridder added his second making it 0-5 with a lovely chip from an acute angle.
On 56 minutes De Ridder was up for his hat-trick after being awarded a penalty, his penalty was saved well by Letheren in the Barnsley goal, Letheren did in fact contribute to keeping the rout down to six.
The difference in class and budgets was highlighted as Lee Cattermole was given his debut following his £3.5m transfer from Middlesbrough, putting in an impressive performance for his new team.
Michael Brown headed Wigans sixth four minutes from time, ending a tortuous night for the reds. I can only hope this kind of result will ignite the required fire in the Barnsley heart for the forthcoming season.
