Wolves 2 - Barnsley 0

MATCH REVIEW :

Mick McCarthy's men too strong for reds.

Wolves strengthened their hold on top spot with a 2-0 victory over Barnsley at Molineux.

Barnsley, without a win in our previous three Championship games and without a victory at Molineux since 1991, let Mick McCarthy's side take all three points.

Wolves took the lead through a Bobby Hassell put one in his own goal on 19 minutes, wolves later secured victory against the tykes when Kevin Foley scored the second four minutes from time.

As expected, Wolves started on in a positive fashion that has seen them lead the Championship most of the season, and Foley tested the hands of Heinz Muller with a shot from just outside the area.

Barnsley were moving forward but were caught on the counter attack in the 19th minute with a swift Wolves move creating the opener.

Following build-up play from David Edwards and Foley, a dangerous cross was missed by Muller and unfortunately for Hassell, he turned the ball into his own net.

It was almost 2-0 minutes later through Foley, who was causing the Tykes all sorts of problems down the right, fired a powerful shot just wide of the post from 20 yards out.

More pressure followed from Wolves which resulted in another chance for Andy Keogh, who missed with his close-range header.

We were dealt yet another injury just before half-time as Brazilian centre-back Dennis Souza was had to come off through injury.

The second half started slower with Wolves seemingly happy to sit on their one goal lead. This encouraged the Tykes, and we took control of the game, but found it hard to get through the home defence despite some nice build up play in the middle.

We went close in the 65th minute, as Jamie Cureton got himself in space in the area. But the on-loan striker sent his header over the bar but he really should have tested the keeper.

Substitute Maceo Rigters had the best chance to get a point for the reds late on, but he put his far-post header wide of the target, just before Foley sealed victory for the home side five minutes from time with a shot from just inside the area after good work from Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.

The reds now face a slightly more modest Plymouth at Oakwell on saturday, again looking for the points to start flowing again.
